Studio #201 is shared by Grant Williams and Gail Boyd. They are longtime friends and printmakers. This studio greets you with the sight of vintage things, like old printmaking tables, old vinyl records, and other old-school tools of their craft. Grant is a dedicated collector of old things, analog things, and in general, things that bring him a sense of nostalgia. Like in his art, he pulls from those elements and often pairs ideas that might seem conflicted at first but his art has a deeper but subtle message. His work is primarily black and white because of the medium he works in, printmaking that primarily comes from small metal plates he scratches into with an innate ability to draw. He’s possessed this talent his entire life. Whenever he’s not spending time with his family and kids, or building something for his home, he takes time to just draw and make prints on one of the old print presses he and Gail share. Grant puts in an intense level of intricate detail to his work. A skill that aids in his print-making process. He is patient, you have to be when you’re drawing on metal plates. You get one shot, then you hope you’ll get the perfect print. It’s a tedious process but he’s built for it. Among his many skills, both drawing and print-making have led him to teach. He’s been teaching at the Art Students League of Denver for many years now. He’s got a good following in his area of expertise. Grant is very crafty too and can build just about anything. He recently made a large spray booth at the back end of the studio near the windows that face out where the now-demolished blue silos once stood. He uses that booth for coating the beautifully constructed custom picture frames he personally hand builds. You can often hear the faint sound of jazz music late at night from Grant’s old vinyl collection.
