Blue Silo Studios, located at 4701 National Western Drive in Denver, stands as a testament to the city's evolving artistic and industrial landscape. Originally constructed in the late 1800s, the building began its journey in the early 1900s as a creamery, serving the burgeoning local dairy industry. Over the decades, it transitioned through various roles, including functioning as a janitorial supply company, before embracing its current identity as a creative hub.
In 2000, artists Chandler Romeo and Reed Weimer acquired the historic structure, recognizing its potential as a vibrant artistic space. They transformed the building into Blue Silo Studios, designing it to accommodate a diverse community of creatives. Today, it houses 15 visual artists specializing in disciplines such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, as well as writers and a music recording studio. Each studio within the building boasts high ceilings and an airy ambiance, fostering an environment conducive to artistic inspiration.
Situated atop a hill just north of Interstate 70 and Washington Street, Blue Silo Studios is nestled between the historic Elyria-Swansea neighborhood and the National Western Stock Show Arena. This location places it within Denver's River North (RiNo) Arts District, an area renowned for its rich industrial heritage and vibrant arts scene. Elyria, incorporated in 1890, and Swansea, established around 1870, were both thriving communities that contributed significantly to Denver's development. The construction of Interstate 70 in 1964, however, bisected these neighborhoods, leading to significant changes in their dynamics.
Today, the area surrounding Blue Silo Studios is experiencing rapid transformation. New structures are emerging both to the east and north of the building, reflecting the ongoing development within the RiNo Arts District. While the pace of change is swift, the current phase of development in this specific enclave remains uncertain. Despite the evolving landscape, Blue Silo Studios continues to serve as a steadfast haven for artists, preserving the creative spirit amidst the flux of urban redevelopment.
